Kuttukaran Institute for Human Resources development (KIHRD), was incepted on 30th October, 1987. as an arm of Popular Automobiles to develop its employees by imparting training in skills development and personality development. K. P. Paul founded the Kuttukaran Group, a compendium of business entities and a name to reckon with in the automobile industry. Entrepreneurship was the hall mark of his businesses. He expired in 2007 after being in business for almost 70 years.
Kuttukaran Family, to which he belonged, and his well wishers have founded K. P. Paul Foundation, a registered Trust, in 2008 to commemorate his entrepreneurial spirit. The main objective of the Trust, is to develop entrepreneurship by providing micro finance.
Initially the Trust is striving to empower women in Thrissur District, Kerala which is the native place of K. P. Paul, by developing entrepreneurship within them by providing adequate financial assistance for the activities they take up, be it cow rearing, goat rearing, bee keeping, tailoring or catering etc. The assistance would normally range from Rs.10,000/- to Rs.50,000/-. The money is not given free, it has to be repaid in monthly installments after the initial payment holiday period. The Trust charges a nominal interest of 5% p.a. also to make them understand that it is not free assistance and they have a stake in it. The scheme has been in place for nearly 5 years and the beneficiaries number 49. Out of 49, 47 have succeeded and there are only 2 failures for reasons beyond their control. The endeavour is in line with what is intended.
The activities of the Trust are carried out by Rajagiri – Casp, an initiative of CMI Fathers and a platform for sponsorship projects. The agency handles the entire spectrum of activities right from indentifying the beneficiaries, training them, guiding them, monitoring their projects, helping them to come out of difficult situations, counselling them and finally making them successful entrepreneurs
